Tunnels

In Pizarras Gallegas we are very consious of the protection of the environment. This is the reason why we have chosen to extract the slate in tunnels rather than in open cast which continues to be the most traditional method.
The tunnels have an average width of 18 meters and an average high of 6 meters when they are in construction. Once all the material is extracted, the high can reach approximately 25 meters. The tunnels have a length between 200meters and 1km.

Nowadays we have 6 tunnels in operation.

More than 300 tons are extracted every day which is equivalent to approximately 10 trucks. Only 5 % will be used for the final product. All the extra material will serve to refil the previous tunnels.
After the mining studies, we can guarantee that we have reserves for the next 25 years.

The Production

The production of the natural slate is « hand made » and completly natural. There is 5 important steps :
1 – Extraction from the tunnels
2 – The sawing of the blocks
3 – The splitting « hand made »
4 – The cutting process for each piece
5 – The quality control and the packaging

The annual production is 23000 tons which approximately represents 65 palets made per day between all the different formats.
